Digit is a personal robot for consumers that at its core is an "Internet of Things" device which leverages unique electromechanical interfaces for hardware expansion.  I developed the mechanical designs for the early prototypes and also developed all the electronics for each major prototype generation.  And although there have been major delays in the development of this product, we do intend for some embodiment of the invention to be realized in the marketplace in the future.

In collaboration with Koncept VR / F360 and GoPro, I developed all of their latest generation 360 VR cameras which have remained the top selling 360 degree camera systems on the market today.  The F360 GoPro Explorer model also inspired the creation of the GoPro Omni camera system design which is the Explorer's sister product and is also sold through GoPro / Kolor http://www.kolor.com/.  Through Koncept VR the camera models I've developed have been used for all of the most recent major ULA / NASA rocket launches at Cape Canaveral, and other wonderful productions such as the viral 360 degree Hamilton commerical video for the Tony Awards. http://www.konceptvr.com/

The QBracelet is a wearable charger for an iPhone which I led the engineering for as the founding technical lead for the company.  More specifically, I developed the mechanical designs for the intermediate prototypes, and developed all of the electronics from the first working prototype to the initial final production run.  We also collaborated with Tomorrow Lab and Dragon Innovation (which led production of Roomba) to help optimize our final production effort. The rights to the product was later sold to Mark & Graham which is owned by Williams Sonoma.

Everwarm is a low cost infant incubator that was created for hospitals in developing countries and was the first product for an organization I co-founded called World Medical Technologies.  I led the development which included a unique electromechanical design that allowed all the electronics to be easily replaceable on cards, thus making the device more sustainable.  Everwarm also draws less power and is immune to power spikes and brown outs and integrates a simple and intuitive interface.  We collaborated with IMEC and UNICEF which led to partnerships with the governments and hospitals of different countries from around the world, including in the Domincan Republic, India, and Uganda.

In collaboration with J&J, I developed the mechanical and electronic hardware design for a radical and futuristic new technology that is expected to revolutionize a major area of healthcare once it launches for medical practitioners and consumers.

In collaboration with Hoberman Associates, I helped develop and fabricate Emergent Surface which was the first realization and prototype for a new kind of technology that allows the skins of buildings to be transformable and react to the position of the sun to help optimize building temperatures by minimizing heat and mazimizing coolness.  The prototype was premiered at MOMA. http://www.hoberman.com/

Co-led the development of nHale — a low-cost, bi-level positive air pressure device. I also co-launched Nanotronics Health which is the medical device subsidiary to Nanotronics Imaging for the production and distribution of the nHale device.

During the start of the pandemic in 2020, I designed a UV germicidal robot in collaboration with Nanotronics to sterilize spaces of Covid and other bacteria.

Prefius is a mobile distribution robot that I developed with my robotics company, Avar Robotics.

Laan is a musical instrument that uses water, tonewheels, and a physics concept called acoustical impedance mismatch to generate sound.  For its primary interface, it uses Force Sensing Resistors (FSRs) which are configured in a unique array to allow the musician to create new kinds of musical patterns.  This particular invention is special to me because it was an idea that I came up with when I was about 13, and it showed me how an idea can evolve over time and also how challenging it can be to realize a hardware innovation.  I play 7 musical instruments (3 of which I've mastered), and have written a number of musical compositions, and it is a childhood dream of mine to see this technology eventually be mass produced and also played by some of the great musicians (pop, electronic, jazz, and classical) of the world today.

In the past, I have developed several different scientific instruments and testing machines for unique applications. The machine pictured below was for an unusual application that was based around testing sensors for a leading sensor company in the US. Because of the very high PSI requiremet, it was necessary to use hydraulics to achieve what the customer wanted. It was a very challenging machine to realize that even needed a chassis with wheels to accommodate transporting its 200 pound weight. In spite of the projects highly constrained budget, I was able to figure out ways to reduce the cost for some of the follow up components that were not considered in the original budget, such as the chassis, which I created by rebuilding an inexpensive hand cart.

Starting in 2007 / 2008 I began building foldable display mobile device which was more than a decade before the industry for these kinds of device existed. This allowed me to file some of the earliest and most fundamental patents for flexible display mobile devices.

At my robotics company, Avar Robotics, I’ve developed several unique kinds of end effectors for picking functions and material handling.

Throughout the years, I've developed and patented several medical and surgical devices. The device shown in the image below is of a surgical device I invented which is based around a unique expandable mechanism that is used for tissue dilation.

Over the years, I've spent a great deal of time exploring unusual robotic concepts.

Coda Z is an ongoing experimental project that relates to the development of humanoid robots with two core missions.  The project is currently in stealth mode.

This is the first figure from a patent for a unique implantable medical device that I filed when I was in my early 20s entitled “Electroactive Polymer Actuated Cerebrospinal Fluid Shunt”. It was the second patent that I ever filed, and also the second patent of mine that was ever issued some years later (and it has also been referenced by patents from Johnson & Johnson’s Synthes DePuy which is the world’s largest implantable medical device company). While my interest in implantable shunts originally stems from a meeting that I had with one of the inventors of the Ghajar Guide, which is a special drill used for ventriculostomies (compounded with the fact that my grandmother had hydrocephalus and a shunt implanted to mitigate the symptoms from her condition), it also stems from the fact that I had a near-death experience of my own from a medical condition that I was impaired with when I was in my early 20s. This was a condition that I would have died from had I not been lucky enough to have had access to the right medical care and technology at that time, and I’m glad to be able to utilize my passion for invention and engineering today to contribute back to the field of medical innovation through devices like the one I’ve posted here.

It is a lesser known fact that when I was 24, I was the youngest person hired to work on the small and exclusive structural engineering team at WSP and SOM that developed the structures for One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) and Two World Trade Center.  After graduating from Cooper Union, I continued to work for Hoberman Associates on robotic technologies, but was then hired by Ahmad Rahimian who was my former Structural Engineering Professor to work on large scale structural mechanisms that integrated dampers for seismic loads on various projects (in a sense, a robotic structural system).  It was an evolving technology, but I ended up being put primarily on other projects, which included the two most prominent towers at WTC since Ahmad is the lead Structural Engineer behind most of the WTC site.  I worked on the shear wall design (the core central structure) for Two WTC, and in collaboration with the digital design group at SOM, I contributed to the structural design concepts for One WTC's antenna structure.  I left after a year to continue to pursue my work with robotics and entrepreneruship.

Throughout my career, I've worked on a number of unique robot designs and, as a result, have had to develop various kinds of drive mechanisms that had unique requirements.

Coda is a new automation system that can be used in place of a large scale industrial robotic arm for similar applications, but with the advantages of being more streamlined, more flexible, more cost-effective, more safe, and more adaptable for human-machine collaboration.

Kinmod (Kinetic Module) - Wave Power Generator: After graduating from college, one of the first products I began developing, with the intention of bringing it to market, was a smaller scale version of the wave power generator prototypes that I had developed and built for my senior project in school, which could be built out into different size arrays with small modules. This was also my first real experience at trying to raise money for a hardware startup, and I soon realized after about a dozen rejections from prospective investors how difficult it was going to be to try to raise the capital I needed for not just alternative energy technologies, but anything related to hardware. This was a technology that I ended up shelving as a result of the limited funding interest from investors in alternative energy production, but I do hope to revisit this area of innovation in the future as it is of profound importance to helping humanity thrive.
